The journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step.

I remember it like it was yesterday. The first time I put on a gi. I was so excited about embarking on a new journey. I remember one of the first things I ever saw in the dojo. It was a plaque in the intro room with the Chinese proverb, The journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step . Isnt that true. That proverb stayed lodged in my head. I remember thinking that my goal is to one day be a black belt. It didnt take long for that goal to change. I realized that black belt is only the beginning. Jiu-jitsu is more than that. Its a way of life. Its a balance of mind, body, and soul. This way of life consumed me in a way nothing else ever did. What was it about this life style that made me want more? First, the knowledge passed on to me by great teachers. Second, the hard rewarding physical training I received that push me beyond any physical expectation. Third, the relationship I developed with God. What more can I ask for? Trust me, there is more. Ive come to develop a greater level of respect and discipline for everything that surrounded me. My heart also grew. I developed this incredible passion the give back the gifts I received from my teachers to a future generations of black belt. I cant find no greater reward than in giving. I live for the moments for when Im on the mat and I see a student do a new throw for the first time. Or when I present a student with a new belt and the look in their eyes is the same look I gave my teachers when I got promoted to any level. Oh what a feeling, to know that I was a part of that growth. This is what its all about. Part of the steps in my journey is not just for me to grow in the arts, but also to help other grow as well. I find that through teaching others I learn so much more about myself than I ever thought I would. I will not stand here and say that its an easy road to take. But what I can say for sure is that it is one worth taking. I can say this. As long as I have life in my body, I will never stop moving on my thousand mile journey. I leave you with this. Learning is limitless. You have to fight for what you want. Go for it. Its worth it.
